چکیده

In addition to reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, actively removing CO from the atmosphere is widely considered necessary keep global warming well below 2°C. Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) describes a suite of such removal processes that all involve enhancing buffering capacity seawater. theory, OAE both stores and offsets ocean acidification. practice, response marine biogeochemical system must be demonstrably negligible, or at least manageable, before it can deployed scale. We tested two natural seawater mixed layer microbial communities in North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre, one Western gyre boundary, middle gyre. conducted 4-day microcosm incubation experiments sea, spiked with three increasing amounts alkaline sodium salts 13 C-bicarbonate tracer constant pCO . then measured dissolved particulate parameters constrain chemical biological these additions. Microbial demonstrated occasionally measurable, but mostly responses alkalinity enhancement. Neither site showed significant increase biologically produced CaCO 3 , even extreme loadings +2,000 μmol kg −1 At enhancement did not significantly impact net primary production rates. contrast, central decreased by ~30% The incubations shift toward smaller particle size classes, suggesting may community composition and/or aggregation/disaggregation processes. terms effects, we identify equilibration inorganic precipitation, immediate effects during mixing solutions seawater, as important considerations for developing experimental methodologies, practical deployment. These initial results underscore importance performing more studies diverse environments, need investigate coupling between OAE, processes, composition.

Microbial diversity associated with copepods in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre.

Patchiness of marine microbial communities has an important influence on microbial activities in the ocean, particularly in the oligotrophic open ocean where bioavailable nutrients are otherwise scarce. Such spatial heterogeneity is present in associations with dead and living particles, including zooplankton. The microbial community composition of mesozooplankton was investigated from the Sarg...

Oxygen and Nitrate New Production and Remineralization in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre

New estimates are obtained of oxygen utilization rates on isopycnal surfaces in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre thermocline based on tritium inventories (2.4-3.5 mol m -2 yr -1) and 228Ra measurements (8.5 _+ 0.8 mol m -2 yr-l). Arguments are given for why the tritium inventory oxygen utilization rate estimate may be too low. The 228Ra results are combined with recent estimates of oxygen ut...

Differential Responses of Eukaryotic Phytoplankton to Nitrogenous Nutrients in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Fixed inorganic nitrogen (N) is persistently scarce in the well-lit regions of the subtropical ocean gyres and its supply plays an important role in controlling phytoplankton productivity. In a series of experiments conducted in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG), we examined changes in primary productivity and eukaryotic phytoplankton community structure in response to additions of nitr...

Organic nutrients and excess nitrogen in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre

To enable an accurate estimate of total excess nitrogen (N) in the North Atlantic, a new tracer TNxs is defined, which includes the contribution of organic nutrients to the assessment of N:P stoichiometric anomalies. We measured the spatial distribution of TNxs within the subtropical North Atlantic using data from a trans-Atlantic section across 24.5 N occupied in 2004. We then employ three dif...

Plastic ingestion in oceanic-stage loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) off the North Atlantic subtropical gyre.

Juvenile oceanic-stage sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to the increasing quantity of plastic coming into the oceans. In this study, we analysed the gastrointestinal tracts of 24 juvenile oceanic-stage loggerheads (Caretta caretta) collected off the North Atlantic subtropical gyre, in the Azores region, a key feeding ground for juvenile loggerheads. Twenty individuals were found to have ...
